According to records from the first half of the 13th century, this temple dates from 997. As he had seen in a dream, Tachibana-no-Yukihira was on the way back to his homeland, when he pulled a statue of the Yakushi Nyorai (the god who cures illness) out of the sea. This became the central image of the temple. Successive emperors sent envoys in unlucky years to receive blessings from the deity on their behalf. The Main Hall was reconstructed in 1886 and houses the Yakushi Nyorai, an Important Cultural Property that has escaped fire on numerous occasions. Founded in 1003.
