TODAIJI
GREAT EASTERN TEMPLE
 
 

It was completed in 752 AD.  This temple was built to house the image of the Great Buddha.  The main building is one of the largest wooden constructions in the world.  Japan's largest Buddha statue stands inside this temple.

The temple architecture, with its impressive roof, was introduced from China, along with many other cultural elements.  The lanterns are made of bronze and is in pure Chinese T'ang Dynasty style:  from the Tempyo are period of Japan  (724-794).

This is one of the earliest and most powerful buddhist monasteries in Japan.
 

Horyuji Temple is the oldest Buddhist temple in Japan, it's also believed to be the oldest wooden structure in the world.  This temple was built in 607 AD.  The temple contains a Yumedono, "the hall of dreams."  It was originally built by Prince Shotoku in the 7th century.

This temple was rebuilt at the end of the 7th century.
